The compact Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' will grow to a 2.5 x 2 metre bush in 20 years. Large goblet shaped flowers appear in spring, early summer and then intermittently until the autumn. The lightly fragrant flowers are dark red-purple externally and creamy white/pink inside, creating a lovely contrast.
Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' starts flowering earlier than most other Magnolias, making it a great choice for spring interest. It has gorgeous glossy, dark/mid-green ovate deciduous foliage up to 20cm long. This small Purple Magnolia has the RHS AGM and is an ideal small garden tree or can be kept in a container. We recommend planting in well-drained soil in a sheltered position in full sun or part shade for the best results.
